Location: Isle au Haut, Acadia, Maine, USA (Mailboat departs from Stonington)
Accommodations: Cottage, 5 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths (Sleeps 10)
Stone Cottage, the summer home of Chief Justice Harlan Fiske Stone, overlooks the Thoroughfare between Isle au Haut and Kimball's Island. Located on the edge of the village, it borders Acadia National Park. Stone Cottage is a large, rambling, comfortable summer home with five bedrooms, two-and-one-half bathrooms, a large kitchen, living room and dining room, a wraparound porch, and generations of laughter, singing, and wonderful memories. Dogs that will not worry the deer are welcome. Bicycles are recommended; some cars can be rented.
Isle au Haut, accessible by mail boat three times a day from Stonington, is certainly the most beautiful island off the coast of Maine; perhaps the world. Access is limited and controlled. The island is six miles long, three miles wide, has five mountains, one road, several harbors, and countless rugged cliffs and commanding views. When the mail boat leaves it takes the world with it.
The village has a grocery, tiny post office, one-room school house, town hall/library, church, softball field, wharf, and fire station. There are no shoppes or restaurants. Half of the island is owned by the park and has miles of hiking trails. Isle au Haut has about 30 year-rounders and perhaps another 100 rusticators who treasure every second on the island and dream nightly about their next visit.
Life revolves around eating (lobster torn fresh from the sea and delivered at 6 PM), reading (library open three times a week), visiting (store open daily, church - inter-denominational - on Sunday, Bernadine's Beach Parties, the pie sale, lobster bakes, talent show), hiking, sailing, picnics at Boom Beach, swimming at Long Pond, playing games, and star gazing. This is not a place for those who require external electronic stimulation. There is no television or telephone at the cottage. The public phone is a five-minute walk away. There is a daily softball game at Kennedy's Field and Internet access at Revere Library.
